Job opp
I am assuming that posting a job opportunity here is kosher, because the reverse (looking for jobs) is kosher, but if it's not, please just let me know and remove.

I work for the National Guard Association so I can say it's great employer, and with the economy being what it is, I figured I'd share our newest job announcement. Let me know if you have any questions, or use the contact info at the bottom of the announcement.

Happy post-holiday Monday!

KCTS-9 Drops Mister Rogers from daily schedule; news on a national level
This weekend I discovered that KCTS-9 in Seattle, WA dropped Mister Rogers from the daily lineup -- I wrote an email, and this was the reply I got:

Thank you for your interest in KCTS 9 and especially "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood".

Mister Rogers will only be airing on Saturdays at 9:00 AM during July and August. The broadcast rights for these particular programs will be expiring on 8/30/09. PBS would like all of its stations to have a more reliable and uniform kids programming schedule. PBS makes the decisions regarding the re-airing of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, not KCTS 9. We may have to wait until September to know for sure what the final outcome will be.

To send feedback to Mister Rogers site please feel free to contact http://www.fci.org/contact.asp
or contact PBS at http://www.pbs.org/aboutsite/aboutsite_feedback.html

Thank you for writing.

Best regards,

Laurie Lee | Viewer Services

So -- I've written to PBS at the link Ms. Lee provided, and this is my note:

My local PBS affiliate recently dropped Mister Rogers' Neighborhood from its daily lineup -- when I wrote to voice my displeasure, they told me that PBS wants to make its children's programming more reliable across member stations, and that PBS makes the decision as to whether or not to continue airing Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. I am writing to support his program; Mister Rogers is perhaps the very definition of what should
be done with television, and the idea of the program being removed from the schedule saddens me
immensely. I hope this wonderful show airs on a daily basis once again.

I encourage everyone to write notes of support as well. Thanks!

Matt Keeley

You Like Being Single

Being single is just fine with you, but you don't always love it.

Like most people, you would prefer to be attached... but you are rightfully picky.

While you may not need to be in a relationship, you'd like to be in one.

You try to make your life as great as possible, whether you're with someone or not.

Well, I'm Stumped
There is a tradition of making wedding cakes that look like tree stumps. Why? Beats me. And since many of them have little shotgun shells decoratively sprinkled around the edges, I'll let one of you ask.

Here's an example of a stump wedding cake, and also what bride Zsofia asked her baker to make for her wedding:

As you can see, it is remarkably stumpy. Now, again, you may be questioning the reasoning behind celebrating a new life of love together with a murdered tree. To this I say: It's not like it's a real tree, so let it go already. Besides, that's not the point.

So what IS the point?

The point, my dear Wreckies, is that Zsofia got THIS for her wedding cake:

See? Betcha don't give a poo-streaked muck pile why people order stump cakes now. Now you just want a better view of this poo-streaked muck pile.

Happy to oblige, my friends, happy to oblige:

This is a wedding cake, people. A wedding cake. For somebody's wedding. Which people were expected to eat. With their mouths.

Now don't get me wrong: the green shredded coconut adds a festive touch to those 15 cent cardboard rounds, and the fake bird is totally workin' it. Still, the bride suspects (and from this photo, I think with good reason) that the cake may have fallen over a few times en route, since in addition to looking - well, like this - it was an hour late to the reception.

Happily, though, Zsofia reports that by the time the cake arrived most of the guests were too drunk to care what the cake looked like, anyway.

[sniffle] Aw, I just love happy endings, don't you?

Just two
These pics are quite a few weeks old, I kept forgetting to upload and resize em. I got these on a visit to the charity shops of my local village, Hebden Bridge. I always find some nice, interesting stuff there, but there's usually a few horrors. And yes, I did buy these.

That's all, but I'm headed to Newcastle this week and I'll try to find some more horrors for you all!

do you feel woky? Well... do ya?
I loooove this community...

I was almost convinced that I didnt need LJ anymore with the available world of FB and MS, but the communities on here are amazing. This is by far, one of my favorites! Thrift stores/flea markets and garage sales are the best.. even the dino in my main pic was a amazing 69 cent thrift store find.. My hubby and I have a house furnished with second hand items but you would never see them on this page.. although, when we shop, we find the BEST oddball wtf items and laugh until we cry... I havent uploaded pictures in a while, so heres a few off of my cell phone for starters :) Enjoy!

The Lesser Horrors of Tennessee
Ogling the horror at thrift stores is as much fun for me as finding the gems, so I can't describe the glee this community gives me. I've commented a time or two, but this is my first time sharing the scary. Lots of pics from two local shops.

Stupid, annoying argument resolution...
Mods, feel free to strike this down if it's too incredibly stupid. I consume way too much caffeine.

People, what do you see here?

A horse with armored headgear or a unicorn (o.k., technically not a unicorn, but like a zhevra) with armor around its horn?

Edit:
OK, definite "horse" trend in the answers here. Thanks for the validation. Some guy I know insists that not only is the paladin charger a "unicorn", but that the horn on the armor is exactly the same as the horns on the zhevra or Quel'dorei mounts.

Personally, I think he's short a few chromosomes.

And yes, I have way too much free time.

Outdoor, or Indoor Track?
For some reason I'm quit stubborn and the only workout I really like involves a track. I look at the tags and didn't see anything, I'd prefer outdoor right now but I'm not deadset on it. I live in Sq Hill but anywhere in the city is fine. I was thinking maybe high school football fields?

Visiting
I hope I'm not stepping over the bounds as a vacationer posting here, but I have a question about parking.

All the travel guides simply beat around the bush on parking around the National Mall by stating repeatedly "Use the metro and the bus system", and that's understandable - it's the same deal with downtown here in Pittsburgh. It dies get a little annoying, though - searching for info on Parking in DC and getting the same "Mass transit is better" wherever I turn.   We're staying in Springfield, VA and will be taking the blue line in each day, and we're cool with that. (We're not worried about the Metro safety, it's got a good record recent events notwithstanding.)

However, we'll be driving in next Sunday morning (the 12th), and I was thinking if we get in early enough to take in some of the sites downtown (If that's what you locals call that area), I was wondering if the parking garages might be a little more empty, or parking spots a little bit more available. This way if we get to town before our check-in time we might be able to knock a few places (like monuments, which only require a brief visit) off our list.  And the walking would be great after the car ride.

Another reason I'd like to know more about parking downtown in general is because our middle child is autistic, and if she's having a rough morning it might be better for the other rider's nerves if we drove in - she's usually good, but I'd like to at least have an idea of that contingency in my mind.

And naturally any tips you have would be wonderful.  We're a family of five looking for a slow visit, mostly in the morning hours and heading back to the hotel before rush hour hits.

Thanks!

Keaningen versus the ants

Family Circus, 7/5/09

Like all right-thinking Americans, I have often allowed myself to spend idle moments imagining the death of the Keane clan. However, I see now that most of the scenarios I’ve conjured up — terrorist attack, murder-suicide pact, what have you — have been sadly pedestrian. Never, for instance, have I visualized them being killed by giant mutant ants! If we use grinning, doomed Jeffy as a reference point, the monsters in the lowermost chambers have to be at least the size of a terrier. I’m sure all four of the children will make tasty treats for the Queen of this awful colony.

Judge Parker, 7/5/09

Dear creators of the syndicated comic strip Judge Parker:

If you were working on a sitcom, or other long-form narrative acted out by live performers, you might find yourself in a situation where you had written out storylines that your actors were physically unable to perform. For instance, you might have an episode in which your nerdy heroine wows her school with her heretofore unmentioned prowess at jumping, aerial spinning, and other talents necessary for successful cheerleading, only to discover that the young actress tasked with playing the role wasn’t up the challenges laid out in the script. In that case, it would be acceptable, though rather transparent, to have all the action take place off camera.

However, in the comic strip form, your characters have no such limitations, and thus your decision to not show us any of the triumphant cheerleading routine that this entire ludicrous storyline has been leading up to is deeply puzzling.

Sincerely,
The Comics Curmudgeon

P.S. On the other hand, it is enjoyable to interpret the dialogue in the first throwaway panel — “I didn’t know Sophie could do those things!” “Yeah … the cheerleader moms know they’re finished!” — as meaning that Sophie neutralized the cheerleader moms’ dozens of henchmen with her superhuman martial arts skills, and is now preparing to eliminate her chief adversaries once and for all.

Gil Thorp joins the future

Gil Thorp, 7/5/09

HOLY CRAP YOU GUYS GIL THORP HAS A TWITTER! GIL THORP. HAS A TWITTER. And before you say, “Oh, the character Gil Thorp has a Twitter within the context of the fictional Gil Thorp universe, how mundane,” let me just assure you that while Gil Thorp may be a narrative construct his Twitter feed is all too real. Just think of the tweeting slap-fights that will soon break out with Marty Moon!

I am a little concerned about Gil’s statement that he has “a whole beautiful summer to figure it out.” Summertime in Gil Thorp is supposed to be about total deranged lunacy like Gail Martin hiring Coach Kaz, P.I. and Marty Moon getting grifted by Ben Franklin and little girls beating the crap out of each other at gymnastics and Von the teenage DJ protecting his older lady friend from a stalker who can’t spell. Last year’s long, boring continuation of the tale of Elmer the Accidental Illegal Immigrant was a terrible disappointment in this regard, but it will seem like a crazed, non-stop roller-coaster ride on PCP by comparison if we spend the next two months watching nothing but Gil laboriously hunting-and-pecking his way through four or five Twitter updates a day.

Blondie, 7/4/09

Underlying the the absurd, low-stakes suburban antics of Dagwood and his friends has always been a sense of ennui, a feeling that there must be more to life to experience that carpools and borrowed tools. Thus, it’s not surprising that Dagwood and Herb have decided to form a two-man anarchist terror cell, determined to spread destruction for its own sake, offering to their neighbors the joy of being alive that only close encounters with death can provide. Today the bowling alley goes up in flames, tomorrow Dithers Enterprises LLC’s headquarters!

Rex Morgan, M.D., 7/4/09

Good lord, why would Peter ever even consider stepping out on his lovely wife? Estelle the Nutritionist may be fetching enough, but she’d probably look at that plate of lo mein and mutter under her breath about sodium and MSG; Becka, meanwhile, knows just how to drive a man wild, sucking a single long noodle slowly up from the plate while locking her unblinking, reptilian eyes on Pete. Undeniably HOTT, am I right people?

Spider-Man, 7/4/09

If panel three is any indication, the way that Peter Parker makes moments last forever is by crapping in his pants. That way, if someone asks him, “Peter, what would consider to be your greatest achievement as a professional photographer?” he can say “That’s easy! It was the day I got the Bugle to buy my pictures at twice their usual rates!  I remember because that was also the day I pooped in my drawers.”
