Writer's Block: How'd You Get Here?

There are many roads to LiveJournal—how did you first hear about LJ?

View other answers

My older sister (and only sibling), [info]spasmsproject, had a Livejournal which was quite popular - she wrote a very short story each day for a full year (and succeeded, too!). I had been checking in from time to time, and finally created a name to use for commenting.

I chose the name [info]rufushonkerivbecause my mother had mentioned it to me a year or so before when she had been playing with anagrams. I was bummed I couldn't put in spaces.

I bounced from user icon to user icon, until one day when I was watching School House Rock on a DVD compilation I had bought for the kids. (I've always been a huge SHR fan!) Rufus Xavier Sasparilla came on and I let loose with an interjection in my head: "Hey! I'm Rufus!" So later that day I put the DVD in the computer, screencapped around 10 seconds in, and did some photoshopping of the text from throughout the video. Ta-da! I had a personal default icon.

So there you have it. Though I may not post as often as I used to, I stil chek my friends list every day to see your entires and all the communities I'm involved in.

Poker Face by Lady Gaga. (link is to the video - can't embed it)

I first heard it on the radio on the way home from work.  I asked Amber about it when I got home because she's usually on top of things - but she not only hadn't heard of it, but gave me a confused look when I quoted "pah-pah-pah poker face".

She caught it a week or so later.  Now it's stuck in my head.  Get it out!!!!!

Writer's Block: Grab and Go

Scenario: For exactly 1 minute, you get access to all the databases of all the intelligence agencies in the world (CIA, FBI, KGB, MI-5, etc). What do you want to find out before time is up and you're caught and jailed forever?

UFOs. I'm not really expecting to find anything, but sometimes they do seem a little secretive on the subject. I'd just like to know a solid yes/no or "we have this evidence we're having trouble figuring out".

My take on stem cell research.

Do you think stem cell research is good, bad, or dangerous? Should it be funded by the government?

RESEARCH IT!  Find out EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT IT!!!!!!  For crying in the night, somebody has to find it out!

Science is about learning.  All of our lives have been greatly improved by doing edgy research like this.  Understand that there have been times in history where a doctors had to pay people to steal bodies just so they could autopsy and learn - because the religious establishment wanted to keep the bodies intact for when the dead would rise at judgement.  But those examinations have brought us life.

If we can figure out how to grow new organs - or to be able to repair nerve tissue (there's a holy grail for you - stem cells might be the way to do that), then by God we should do it.

Some may say "we can't do that, we'd be playing God!" but I disagree.  No one can play God.  Ever.  Trust me, if there were a way to "play God" God wouldn't put it anywhere NEAR our grasp.  We're only using the tools and possiblities that God has laid out already.

The eternal breakfast dilemma: Sweet or savory?

I want meat with my breakfast.  I'll order pancakes, waffles or french toast, but I'll always save a piece of sausage or bacon to eat so I don't have that sweet taste in my mouth after.

Shel Silverstein. Greatest poet who ever lived, IMHO. I remember tearing up over my bowl of Grape Nuts as I read his obit.

"Put Something In"
Draw a crazy picture,
Write a nutty poem,
Sing a mumble-gumble song,
Whistle through your comb.
Do a loony-goony dance
'Cross the kitchen floor,
Put Something silly in the world
That ain't been there before.

Writer's Block: The Wrath of Ohrwurm

German has a word for everything, like ohrwurm. Translated literally as "earworm" in English, it's the word for songs that get stuck in your head and won't go away. What earworm of a song do you most dread burrowing into your head?

Among the many reasons I dislike television are that I'm VERY SENSITIVE to jingles. Toy commercials from the 80's still go through my head regularly.

Writer's Block: Secret Ballot

It's hard to ignore the fact that today is Election Day in the U.S. If you went to the polls today, tell us what it was like. Long line? Free stickers? Hanging chads? We want the details.

View other answers

I left work at 7:00am and headed straight for the polls. I got there at 7:15 and the line was out the door to the street. They didn't have a John McCain sign outside of the polling place and despite supporting Obama I didn't think that was fair.

Once inside the church building the church had set up a table with coffee and doughnuts, which was a nice gesture. A guy behind me joked that the doughnuts were shaped like O's so they must be telling us to vote for Obama. I countered that someone must have come in before us and eaten all the "M" shaped ones. :)

I got up to the table and was voter #46 today. I got my vote in on the electronic voting machine just fine, but some of the old folks around me still needed help.

We had parent-teacher conferences in the afternoon which went well, and then we stopped by the pharmacy for Amber and then went so amber could vote.  Someone had put up a McCain sign at the polling place during the day, so I was content with the fairness.  I sat off to the side while Amber voted - it wasn't very busy at 3:00pm - and one of the poll workers said that they'd had over 500 people, which is a big showing around here.

GO OBAMA!

Writer's Block: 9/11

What were you doing on September 11th, 2001? How do the events of that day hold meaning for you now?

View other answers

We were living with Amber's parents in the summer of 2001, during a failed attempt to find a house.  I had just gotten home from work, and Amber had left for her job at the bank.  I watch watching our eldest child (nine months old at the time), waiting for my mother-in-law to come  downstairs in an hour or so so I could go to bed.

We were watching Playhouse Disney.  As you can imagine, it wasn't interrupted.

Amber had a customer at the bank who mentioned that a plane hit the World Trade Center.  Knowing I'm a disaster geek she called me up at home.  I figured it was a small plane, like the one that hit the Empire State Building in 1945, but when I switched to CNN both towers had gaping holes - the second plane had hit shortly before I had changed the channel.

I could go on and on, but I won't right now.  I went to work that night against the family's wishes.   Most of the lights were off in downtown Pittsburgh and you could see more stars than normal.  Three FBI agents knocked on the door of my building at 11:15 and needed a judge in the building to sign some paperwork for them.  At 4am mail trucks started pulling into the Amtrak parkinglot on the side of my building and started unloading mail to put onto trains - even the postal planes were grounded.

My best friend friend Mike got married that next weekend.  It was worrisome because half the people were coming from California, but the airports opened just in time for everyone to get here.

Amber at the World Trade Center )
I'll close with this picture of Amber in the lobby of the World Trade Center.  We were on vacation, and it was 1996.  It was very foggy - you couldn't see the top of the towers from the ground. Still, you're not in New York every day (unless you live near there), so we went up the nearly-empty elevator and shopped some at the top. You could only see the buildings at the base with all the fog.

You can imagine how glad we are now that we went up on a foggy day.

Have I eperienced "Paranormal" activity?  No.  That's not through lack of interest, though.  I've just never seen jack.  Same deal with me and UFOs.

Writer's Block: Sharing Haikus

The Japanese haiku poet Basho once wrote, "Old pond / a frog jumps / the sound of water." Try writing some of your own haikus about the little things in your life. A haiku generally consists of a five-syllable line, a seven-syllable line and a second five-syllable line. You can also use any combination of ten-to-fourteen syllables.

Writer's Block: Your Favorite Series: One Last Go Round

I would call back Daria! Daria reminds me most of my life in High School.  I don't identify specifically with Daria or any other character from the series, but the feel and tone of the series just nails High School, in my opinion.  The way that Daria moved from simply hating everyone to someone who found herself accepting that all these people around her were okay in her opinion hit close to home.

I was a great fan of it when it was on TV, and would love to revisit the world.  That and the zingers are great.

Tom:  I guess it was all just a big misunderstanding.
Daria:  That's what Pol Pot said.

Writer's Block: Dream Job

What's keeping you from your dream job?

View other answers

I'm sort of in my dream job, but let me explain:

I didn't care for school.  I didn't mind it, I just didn't like the grading - get things done on time - homework type stuff.  I didn't have a huge problem with showing up on time, staying out of everyone's way, and finding ways to keep myself occupied while not making life rough for the teacher.

I'm a Night Shift Front Desk Attendant.  Daily I find myself using my experience and skills in keeping myself quietly occupied and not causing trouble.  And they thought my lack of interest wouldn't amount to anything!
